Anya McManis

ABOUT ANYA MCMANIS

Abstract painting allows Anya to express what can’t be captured in words—a sense of energy, emotion, and inner dialogue that unfolds through color, layers, and shapes. Formally trained as a graphic artist, she was craving a creative practice that wasn’t driven by outcomes, but by exploration and feeling. That journey led her to painting, where the process itself became a way to connect more deeply with herself and with others. Her background in design still informs how she approaches composition and balance, but in the studio, she allows her intuition to guide her. Each piece is a conversation—an invitation to pause, reflect, and discover something unexpected.

McManis has been painting and exhibiting her work for over 15 years. She is currently represented by Gallery Andrea in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, including at the Artwork Network Gallery and Niza Knoll Gallery in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. She presented a series of seven solo exhibitions at the University of Denver between 2011 and 2019, and has participated in group exhibitions at venues including the Aurora Municipal Center (Aurora, CO), Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts (Palmer Lake, CO), R Gallery (Boulder, CO), the Water for Life International Art Exhibition at the Niagara Falls History Museum (Canada), and the Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy. Her work is also held in private collections.

ARTIST STATEMENT - MIXED MEDIA

My work explores the layered memory of the landscape through abstracted interpretations of geology, atmosphere, and time. Originally from Germany, I have been deeply influenced by the landscapes of the American Southwest that are in such stark contrast to the geology I grew up around. From the deep reds of weathered rock formations and pale mineral veins cutting through stone, to the striking silhouettes of mesas and buttes rising against expansive blue skies with almost geometric precision, the land continues to shape the visual language of my work.

What really fascinates me is the immense sense of time the rock formations carry. They feel like enduring records of change — shaped slowly through erosion, pressure, and exposure over countless years. They stand as quiet witnesses to history, holding traces of distant landscapes, cultures, and memory.

Working in acrylic and mixed media, I build layered surfaces through texture and gradual accumulation of materials and pigment that reference geological strata, shifting horizons, and the passage of time. Circular and symbolic shapes often emerge within the work suggestive of ancient markings or celestial cycles. These elements appear and recede within the painted surface, creating a dialogue between permanence and erosion, structure and spontaneity.

Through a restrained palette of earth tones, turquoise, whites, and metallic accents, I want to create paintings that feel both grounded and atmospheric — evoking landscapes that are at once physical, remembered, and imagined.

ARTIST STATEMENT - ACRYLIC

It all began with a brush. On a whim, during one of my many visits to the art store, I picked up a beautiful angled brush—without any plan for what to do with it. As I tested it, I found myself thinking about how my sisters and I used to compare our handwriting to our father’s. We believed that a single line could reveal something about the person who made it—how much pressure they used, the confidence of the stroke, whether it curved, hesitated, or danced across the page.

When I dipped that brush into black paint and drew my first line, something immediate and visceral came alive. One line led to another, then another, until a rhythm emerged—expressive, spontaneous, and full of energy. That rhythm became the foundation for these abstract acrylics.

This series explores the expressive quality of line and movement through color and composition. Some pieces hint at musical instruments, others flow into pure abstraction, but all share a pulse—a visual improvisation that mirrors the spontaneity of jazzy rhythms.
